T-WAVE ALTERNANS AS SUDDEN CARDIAC DEATH STRATIFIER Manuel Blanco-Velasco Universidad de Alcala, Madrid
Sudden cardiac death (SCD) remains a major cause of mortality in industrialized countries, and in order to reduce its incidence, methods allowing acute patient stratification in terms of risk have been intensively scrutinized and developed. Among the different signal processing based techniques, T-wave alternans (TWA) is a subject of great interest since it has been shown to be an informative risk stratifier for SDC. This phenomenon is found on the surface electrocardiogram as changes in amplitude, waveform, and duration of the repolarization segment occurring on an every-other-beat bases. This talk introduces the state of the art in TWA computational techniques research and also presents some innovative approaches that are being currently developed by our research group.
Short bio: Manuel Blanco-Velasco received the engineering degree from the Universidad de Alcalá, Madrid, Spain in 1990, the MSc in communications engineering from the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, Spain, in 1999, and the PhD degree from the Universidad de Alcalá in 2004. From 1992 to 2002, he was with the Circuits and Systems Department at the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid as Assistant Professor. In April 2002, he joined the Signal Theory and Communications Department of the Universidad de Alcalá where he now works as Associate Professor. His main research interests are biomedical signal processing and communications.
