Course specification

Course is active from 01.10.2011..

Acquiring advanced academic knowledge in the field of the seismic hazard assessment and reduction of seismic risk, and enabling students to carry out a conceptual aseismic design of the civil engineering structures.
Students possess advanced academic and professional knowledge in the field of calculation of earthquake impact on civil engineering structures. They are able to solve problems of different levels of complexity on their own, as well as in communication and interaction with others. They are entrepreneurial and can lead projects of different complexity by respecting the ethical standards of their profession. They have a positive attitude towards lifelong learning and personal and professional development.
General on earthquakes: causes of formation and types of earthquakes, seismic waves, characteristics of the earthquake soil movement, registration of earthquakes, intensity of the seismic action and seismic scales. Seismic hazard assessment, return period of earthquakes, probability of seismic event excess during the life expectancy of buildings. Analysis of construction behavior due to earthquakes: forced suppressed system vibrations with one degree of freedom due to dynamic movement of foundation. Method of equivalent static load and response spectrum method. Conceptual design of seismic resistant constructions: basic objectives and requirements of seismic protection, methodology of design, measures of seismic risk reduction.
Lectures, practical classes, consultations. The theoretical part of the study material is presented at lectures through presentations of individual thematic units, followed by the appropriate examples from engineering practice for the sake of easier perceiving and understanding. At practical classes, the study material is processed through the solving of practical problems with the active participation of students. In addition to lectures and exercises, consultations are held regularly in order to provide students with answers to additional questions related to the study material.
