Course is active from 01.10.2007.. The students will be enabled to appropriate the socio-economic knowledge on the urbanization in modern society. This type of knowledge presents the opportunity to humanistic approach in the science and the capacity to solve the practical problems in urbanism. The appropriation of the knowledge on the characteristics and trends of urbanization-processes in the contemporary societies. This includes knowledge and learning on the globalization of cities, suburbanization-processes and ruralization. This mode of knowledge refers to the inequalities, contradictions in the cities, quality of accommodation, value-horizons of urban planning, urban land, communal economy, management of city government, and the direction of urban economy. The characteristics of urbanization in the developed countries: suburbanization, gentrification, urban conflicts, restoration of cities. Recycling of cities. Urbanization in the developing countries: challenges and contradictions in these countries, future of urbanization. Cities and globalization: global cities, city and periphery, inequality and global cities. Management of cities in global era: management of global processes, cities as the cultural, economic entities. Accommodation and the culture of accommodation, urban politics: quantity and quality, social inequalities, social segregation. Quality of life in modern cities: freedom of creativity, personal and social disorganization. Urban planning: human needs, social values and social integration in the planning of cities. Cities and markets. Economic aspects of globalization. Location of firms in cities. Competitive advantages of the center of cities. Urban land rent. Cities based on knowledge.
