Course is active from 12.02.2009..

The aim of this subject is to provide deep insight in operation of Power Electronics systems connected to electrical grid, emphasizing interactions and challenges. The important aspect is to obtain knowledge in principles, challenges and solutions of power quality.
Upon successful mastering the topic, students will comprehend significance of Power Electronics systems in modern distribution grid. They will obtain knowledge in power quality indices. Students will be able to measure, estimate and propose measures with the aim of power quality improvement. Students will obtain knowledge in harmonics filters design, power factor compensation starting from simple methods up to modern VAR compensators such as FACTS.
Fundamentals of control in electric power systems. Voltage and frequency regulation of the electric power system. Distributed generators and their integration into the electric power system. Requirements for connection of distributed generators to the electric power system. Power electronic converters in distribution systems. Photovoltaic and wind energy power electronics converter control. Energy storage systems.Principles and indices of power quality. Causes of grid voltage and current disturbances. The impact of Power Electronics devices and system to power quality. Estimation of higher harmonics. Laboratory and field measurements. K-factor. Resonance. Filter basics. Filter design for higher harmonics elimination. Power factor compensation. Static VAR compensators. Voltage sags impact on electrical machinery and devices operation. Operation and control of Power Electronics devices connected to distribution grid. Basics on microgrids and isolated grids.
The subject will be study through the presentation of theoretical principles in lectures, problem solving appropriate to the auditory exercises and the practical work in the laboratory.
