Course specification

Course is active from 10.10.2007..

The aim of the course is to: • To explain students in detail the nature of computer communications , existing reference models and the advantages of working in a network • Review the existing types of computer networks and their topologies • To explain the term of physical and logical network topology • Describe in detail and explain key concepts of network architecture, existing IP technologies, and network protocols at L2, L3, L4, L5, L6 and L7 layers in IP network • Learn student how to choose and use different methods and tools for network monitoring • Explain students how to locate problem in the network and solve it using some of the IP technologies • Explain students how to discover network attacks and implement the most effective security method.
Students will be able independently to: • Explain the operation and characteristics of the key network technologies in computer communications • Use different networking concepts and to implement appropriate network architecture • Use different IP network technologies and employ significant network resources services for implementation various network services • Use network monitoring tools in order to locate problems in the network, and solve it using appropriate IP technology • Discover attack and to apply the most effective security method.
• ISO OSI and TCP/IP protocol stack • Rules and standards for the implementation of network services • Physical and logical network topology • Defining the types of ports, logical separation and aggregation of traffic on the L2 layer (LACP protocol) • Providing redundancy, reliability and load distribution layer L2 - STP protocol • Addressing the L3 layer - IPv4 and IPv6 • Providing redundancy, reliability and load distribution on the L3 layer - FHRP and GLBP protocol • Protocols for internal and external routing of traffic in computer networks - OSPF protocol, BGP protocol. • ICMP, ARP, RARP and IGMP protocol • Transport layer protocols - TCP protocol and UDP protocol • Transport layer protocols - TCP protocol and UDP protocol • Flow control in IP networks • Service planning and service quality policy definition • Selection of equipment for network infrastructure • Design of NTP service • Creating virtual infrastructure on the L2 layer - VLAN • Tunneling technology and creating VPN services • Firewall technology • Computer network management - log analysis, SNMP protocol • Technology of network infrastructure virtualization • Wireless LAN networks - IEEE 802.11 family of standards
• Lectures - based on a student-centered method of education • Laboratory practice (working with Cisco Packet Tracer Simulator and other network simulator) , where it will be applied method of learning through competition among students • Consultations based on a active learning method.
