Subject: Introduction to engineering
(12 -
ASO) Basic Information
Course specification
Course is active from 01.10.2013.. Learning about fundamental principles of sciences (force and deformation under force, energy, transformation of energy, propagation of electromagnetic waves, current and voltage, propagation of sound and light, signals, and transmission) through understanding of basic concepts, terminology and problem-solving approach. Learning about principles of engineering reasoning and decision-making. Knowledge of engineering tools based on fundamental physical and engineering principles, which offer numerical answers to questions how, why and how many. Learning the language which allows effortless communication and problem-solving, creative thinking and, if needed, continuation of individual learning.
States, state properties, changes of states and equations relating these changes. Object under considerations and their state properties. Causes of motion and deformation of bodies. Newton-Euler axioms and the Newton-Laplace determinacy principle for motion in the Euclidean space. Constitutive equations. Problems of mechanics. Types, analysis of deformation and the carrier lines. Axioms of thermomechanics. Basics of electrotechnics, electronics and telecommunications: fields and propagation, electromagnetic field, light, electrical characterization and types of materials, circuit and voltage, propagation of sound, acoustic-electromagnetic analogies, metamaterials, cloacking. Deductive method. Careful selection of examples that illustrate application of the theory to analyze how to make and use various objects, why some methods are feasible and some are not, why are some techniques superior to others.
