Course specification
Course is active from 01.10.2009.. Introduction to the techniques and methods of connecting renewable energy sources to the electrical grid. Students will become familiar with the problems of connecting renewable energy systems to the distribution network. They will gain knowledge about techniques and principles about solving the grid connection problems.Students will be able to independently work on connection of renewable energy sources to the power grid, they will be able to execute series of simulations which are necessary to connect to the distribution and transmission system in accordance with the existing requirements of the distribution and transmission companies. Introduction. Principles of conversion of solar and wind energy to electrical energy. Description of the major components of the system of solar and wind energy sources. Characteristics of islanding mode. Methods and techniques of connecting solar and wind systems on the network. Characteristics of the system that is connected to the distribution network. Problems and solutions for the island's transition mode. Short circuit current calculation when connecting the system to the grid. The issue of the proper selection of protective system components. The behavior of the system during faults. The behavior of the system in overload situations. The power quality issue. Surge protection systems. Analysis and comparison of the characteristics of commercially available solutions. Grid code requirements. The fulfillment of grid connection requirements. Simulation tools for grid connection requirements checking Lectures and auditory exercises are intended to introduce students to area of grid connected renewable energy sources. During lab exercises, students will be introduced to several commercially available solutions connecting the system to the grid.
