Course specification
Course is active from 01.10.2004.. Precondition courses
Course which have preconditioned courses Technology of concrete
Getting to know the theoretical bases of concrete, as a composite material.
Obtaining knowledge on the specificity of component materials and properties and methods for examining fresh and hardened concrete. Mastering knowledge on methodology of concrete mix design, traditional and modern technologies for concrete production, formwork types and procedures for execution of concrete structures. Training for the design of the concrete project. Acquired knowledge is used in professional courses and in engineering practice. Students are competent to select the adequate type of “normal” concretes and design its content, the technology for constructing concrete structures, to monitor and examine the concrete quality during the construction process and to elaborate the concrete project. Acquired competencies can be used in designing and construction of concrete structures. Component materials for concrete. Structure and properties of fresh concrete (rheological properties, technological properties, other properties). Structure and properties of hardened concrete (micro and macro structure, basic strength laws, compressive strength, tensile and shear strength, modulus of elasticity and Poisson`s coefficient). Rheological properties of hardened concrete. Specific properties of hardened concrete (frost resistance, frost de-icing salts resistance, wear resistance, waterproofness). Concrete mix design for different types of concrete. Producing concrete mixture, transporting concrete, placement of concrete and curing of concrete. Execution of basic elements of concrete structures. Special techniques for placement of concrete. Curing at elevated temperatures. Hot-weather and cold-weather concreting. Concrete quality control. Project on concrete. Lectures, auditory and laboratory practice, visiting concrete plant and construction sites and consultations. During lectures, presentations with photographs, tables, diagrams, formulas and appropriate text – definitions are used to explain the students the course content predicted by the curriculum. In laboratory practice, students design and batch and mix concrete mixtures and test basic properties of fresh and hardened concrete. A part of the practice is used for computing, where students through different tasks connect the presented course content with the construction practice. Visiting a concrete plant and construction sites is obligatory for all students. Students are evaluated during lectures and exercises as well as their graphic work. The exam consists of a theoretical and practical - written part. The written part of the exam is eliminatory. Parts of the lectures can be taken through one colloquium during semester. The theoretical part is taken orally in examination terms.
