Course specification
Course is active from 01.10.2007.. Introducing students to the basics of pedology, propagation of pollution in different environmental media, and modern methods of remediation. Students are trained in terms of understanding the problems and complexities of soil remediation and are being introduced to all relevant factors in these processes. The goal of the course is to develop a multidisciplinary view of the problems, soil remediation, which is necessary for understanding and solving problems in such a dynamic system. Theoretical classes. Basic concepts of pedology, physical and chemical characteristics of soil, geological features of Serbia and Vojvodina soil, soil quality in Serbia and Vojvodina, the quality of soil in Europe, the diffusion of pollutants in soil, basic types of pollutants, LNAPL distribution in soil, Risk and risk assessment, RBCA and EPA method of level assessment procedure of soil pollution and selection of remediation methods. Remediation Methods Review, basic principles of biodegradation of pollutants in soil, biological, physical, chemical and thermal methods of soil remediation. Practical work: Preparation and defense of compulsory seminar paper relating to the applicability of various methods of remediation. Getting acquainted with software for modeling propagation of pollutants in soil. Lectures, auditory exercises, computer exercises, seminar papers, visits to industrial plants and consultations. Lectures: The lectures are concerned with theoretical part of the teaching material with examples in order to facilitate understanding. During exercises that accompany the lectures, examples from lecture material are done in more detail. In computer exercises, students are trained to work on software tools that simulate the processes in the soil and movement of pollutants. A prerequisite for the exam is required and that is: a defended seminar paper and performed computer exercises. The exam is taken in writing.
